About Baker & Baker Real Estate Developers, LLC

A Brief History of Baker & Baker

Baker & Baker Real Estate Developers was founded in the 1950's by first cousins, David Baker and Lee J. Baker, graduates of the University of South Carolina Law School, who both practiced practical law for several years prior to starting the business. The partners began developing office buildings throughout the East Coast for General Motors Acceptance Corporation, Western Union, Western-Southern Life Insurance Company, Life of Virginia and Southern Bell.

In 1963, the firm developed its first retail project in Columbia for S.S. Kresge for a one-stop discount store concept called K-Mart. It was the second K-Mart store built in South Carolina. Baker & Baker went on to develop 22 stores in several Southeastern states.

In 1979, John Baker, David Baker’s son, joined the firm after graduating from the University of South Carolina. Also in 1979, the company co-developed the first outlet mall in Columbia, Outlet-Pointe, anchored by Waccamaw Pottery.

In 1986, the firm developed an 180,000 square foot office facility for Bell South in Columbia, Congaree Vista. It now serves as the Midlands Regional Office for AT&T.

In 1994, the company developed the second store in South Carolina for Publix Grocery Stores in Goose Creek. Also in 1994, Baker & Baker developed its first Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse in Columbia.

In 1995, Steven Anastasion, Lee Baker's son-in-law, joined the company and he and John Baker took over the day to day management responsibilities. David and Lee Baker remained active in the company. In 1995, the firm also completed an effort covering four years, which was the redevelopment of the former Coastal Mall into a strip center in Conway, South Carolina (near Myrtle Beach). The thirty-acre development, called Coastal Center, is anchored by K-Mart, Winn Dixie, Peebles, Belks, Eckerd's and Dollar General. This property was subsequently sold.

The firm also redeveloped a former K-Mart store in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1996. The 105,000 square foot center houses a Harris Teeter grocery store and a Jo Ann Fabrics store, along with Hollywood Video, Cici's Pizza and South Trust Bank.

The firm has also developed freestanding sites for Eckerd Drug Stores and Hollywood Video in recent years. In 2001, the firm provided development expertise for the Ducane Gas Grill plant in Barnwell, South Carolina.

Baker & Baker has a staff of 10 with property management and retail development performed in house. John Baker and Steve Anastasion continue as the Managing Members of the company.
